6 Days Samburu, Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara Safari

Samburu game reserve is essentially lava plain that features steep sided gullies and rounded hills wherein the 32-kilometre Uaso Nyiro River provides both the central feature of the landscape and the lifeblood of the ecosystem.

The vegetation comprises predominantly acacia woodland interspersed with bush, grass and scrubland, which is broken here and there by small rugged hills whilst the meandering loops of the river are bordered by a narrow gallery of riverine woodland in which acacia and doum palm flourish.

This is a dry country ecosystem and is, therefore, prone to large variations in the animal populations as they move in search of water and pasture. Lions, elephants are easy to spot. The range of rare species also includes reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Somali ostrich and gerenuk whilst the bird life is diverse and prolific (over 350 species) and include the marshal eagle, pygmy falcons, hornbills and Egyptian geese.

The Samburu National Reserve was one of the two areas in which conservationists George Adamson and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness made famous in the best selling book and award winning movie Born Free.

The Samburu National Reserve is also the home of Kamunyak, a lioness famous for adopting oryx calves.

Safari Brief: A safari to the Samburu is unique for its game, flora and people found in this northern frontier of Kenya. Enjoy Lake Nakuru's variety and proceed to the Great Masai Mara.

Day 1: Nairobi - Samburu

Depart early from Nairobi and drive to the North via the Great Rift Valley. Enjoy the ever changing flora to the northern arid lands of Kenya after crossing the equator. Arrive mid-afternoon and have lunch at preferred lodge (Click to view accommodation choices in the Samburu Game Reserve).

You will be treated to a late afternoon game drive and eventual dinner and overnight at preferred lodge.

Day 2: Samburu

Early morning and afternoon game viewing drive at Samburu in search of the rarely found species of wild game like the liver-red reticulated giraffe, grevy's zebra, the long necked gerenuk antelopes, beisa oryx, blue flanked somali ostrich, vulturine guinea fowl and also braving lions on the grass, leopards in the trees and plenty of other plains game. In between meals there is optional visit to a Samburu cultural village. All meals and overnight at selected lodge

Day 3: Samburu – Lake Nakuru

Depart Samburu after breakfast drive to Lake Nakuru - arrive in time for lunch - afternoon game drive in Nakuru  with opportunity to spot leopards, rhino and the famous pink flamingos as well as a variety of other wildlife. Over 400 species of birds are found here. This wonderful place is haven for endangered species- particularly the Rothschild Giraffe and the black and white rhino. Lions, waterbuck, buffalo and baboons are also found easily. Dinner and overnight at selected lodge.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru – Masai Mara

 Depart Nakuru after breakfast  ascend the western rim of the valley crossing the Loita plains (maasai-land), see red-clad maasai warriors tend their multi-colored herds amongst plains game.  Arrive in time for lunch. Afternoon game drive in Masai Mara – Dinner and overnight at preferred lodge or camp

Day 5:  Masai Mara

Morning and afternoon game viewing inside the Park. Search for wild game black manned lion for which Mara is famous for, cheetah, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, leopard, grants gazelle are quite common, even the rare rhino might come out of the thicket for you, hyenas are plentiful, Extend your drive to the hippo point where schools of hippo submerge on the approach of vehicles only to surface seconds later to shot and gamble their displeasure as the crocodiles sunbathe on the river banks mouths agape. Between meals there is optional visit to the maasai villages for an insight to their culture. Meals and overnight at selected lodge/camp. Optional Balloon ride.

Day 6: Masai Mara - Nairobi

After a final morning game drive and breakfast drive back to Nairobi.
